Zombies
http://www.zombies.org/zombies.html

A zombie is classified as a dead person that has been brought back from the dead, either through voodoo or medical intervention. They can walk although their movements are usually slow and stuttered. Zombies may also have some other vital aspects to keep them mobile but a higher reasoning or thought process is not one of them. They are generally brain dead although some zombies may have some memories of the life they led previous to becoming a zombie.

In the middle ages, it was widely believed that once a person had died, there bodies could come back to haunt the living. Back then, zombies usually returned because they had unfinished business that they needed to tend to. Usually, this was to avenge their murderer. These zombies were usually very similar to a corpse in their looks and they often stayed around graveyards, especially at night.

Those that believe in voodoo believe that a bokor, a voodoo priest can perform magic, including black magic and that this magic can be used to bring back a person from the dead, resulting in a zombie. The origin of zombies can also be taken to Haiti back in 1937 when it’s thought that people may have been brought back from the dead using intense medicine that restored some life-like activity. Because the practice of voodoo is often kept very secretive, it’s difficult to determine how many bokors actually practice bringing back people from the dead. However, many of the people who live in Haiti believe in the drug, which is called Tetrodotoxin, and believe that zombies can be just about anywhere.

Zombies generally appear to have severe physical injuries and disabilities. This is usually because they sustained a major injury that was either wholly or partially, a reason for their death. When they are brought back to life, the injuries still remain. Most people don’t think that zombies exist, except for in horror movies, in which they are very common. However, that doesn’t mean that people aren’t fascinated by the thought that there may be zombies walking among us. This is why they appear in so many movies, people dress up as zombies on Halloween and why there are zombie walks throughout the entire world. Zombie walks involve groups of people that have dressed up and worn makeup to make them appear as a zombie and they gather together to act like zombies. They usually walk around quite slowly and their destination is generally a graveyard.

Zombie Powers and Abilities
Zombies are creatures that after living their life and then dying, they are brought back from the dead through a number of ways. Hollywood has created the image that zombies are something to be feared because they have a constant urge to eat on the flesh or brains of other living humans. But what powers do zombies actually have? The truth is that zombies are not magical creatures who can move objects without touching them and they definitely can’t move faster than a speeding bullet or walk through walls. They really only have two powers, which really aren’t powers at all. They are simply urges to kill or to make living humans become zombies as well. Besides these powers, or urges, do zombies have any weaknesses or are all humans at the mercy of zombies?

The first power that zombies possess, or reason why they should be feared, is that they have a constant craving to feast on human brains or flesh. This concept is often misunderstood because they sometimes have no mouths or stomachs, as those have sometimes been removed in their dying process or after they have died. Zombies simply have the craving for human flesh because they are dead and therefore, crave that which is living. This type of killing done by zombies is mostly found in the horror movies. Voodoo zombies have generally been thought of as harmless and are merely slaves to the master that created them.

But eating flesh is not the only way that zombies have the power to kill. Once a zombie has bitten a living human, the person will begin to get sick and die. This happens quite quickly, usually within approximately three days. After the person has died from the zombie bite, they will generally come back to life in the form of another zombie. This can make great storylines as it causes the number of zombies to grow at incredible rates. It’s not known why this happens but it could have a large part to do with the fact that zombies are very contaminated and sickly creatures. The person may just simply catch their disease although this still does not explain why they would come back as a zombie.

As deadly as they can be, zombies do have weaknesses. The first weakness is that they have no mind and are a slave to their creator. Because of this, they have no control over what they do. Whether this is an actual weakness is debatable due to the fact that because they have no mind, they have no desires and therefore, should logically be indifferent as to what they do. They are also extremely slow-moving. This is an actual weakness to them when they are trying to feed off living humans that can outrun them very easily. For this reason, zombies often attack in large groups when they can surround their prey.

Types of Zombies
There are many different types of zombies and it is from these different types that there are many different theories about what a zombie is and what they do. To fully understand the world of zombies, you must first have to understand that there are many different types of zombies, and what these different types are made of, and what they are capable of.

The Voodoo Zombie

The Voodoo zombie exists mainly in Haiti where sorcerers bring people back from the dead through the practice of voodoo. These zombies once lived very normal lives but once a sorcerer performs the voodoo on them, either in the way of a spell or a potion, it is then that they die and come back to life. When they come back to life, they have no mind of their own and are under the complete spell of the one that put them in the zombie state. You can tell just from looking t them that they are zombies as they express no emotion or facial features. The only time that they may remember something from their former life is if they are placed in a situation or place that they had powerful emotional ties to in their formal life.

The Hollywood Zombie

Perhaps what first comes to mind when one hears the word “zombie” is the type of zombie that is often seen in Hollywood movies. These zombies are almost always identical in the way that they walk, which is slowly, in the way that they talk, which is mainly nonexistent with the exception of a few grunts, and their constant search for food, which is usually human flesh or brains.

The Philosophical Zombie

Although most people don’t believe in the existence of actual zombies, the philosophical zombie is the type that could most probably exist. These zombies are just like other people in the world in the way that they speak and act. However, they are different in the way that they have no conscious experience. Because they still lack a mind, they are able to interact with others but have no thoughts or feelings about those interactions.

The Functional Zombie

The functional zombie is closely related to the philosophical zombie. This type of zombie is genetically different from humans. They may have computer chips in place of blood cells, for instance. However, they appear and act just like humans. There’s a general agreement among people and scientists that if there are truly zombies on Earth, these are the most probable type.

How to Survive a Zombie Attack
Although it’s generally thought that zombies are a creation of Hollywood in order to sell tickets to horror movies, there are functional and philosophical zombies, which are believed to be real and therefore likely to attack should they meet up with a living human. If a living human is attacked by a zombie, there is almost no chance for survival due to the fact that even if the zombie doesn’t kill the human that it attacks, it will turn them into a zombie simply by biting them. For this reason, it’s very important to know how to defend yourself so that you will be able to survive an attack, or avoid one altogether.

The first defense to use is to kill them during the early stages of their transformation into a zombie. Just before a zombie gets into the deeper stages of being a zombie, they are not of their sound mind. They will often be motionless and appear to be in a trance. This is the time that they should be killed. Although it sounds extreme, it is not only better for the person that will inevitably be attacked but it is also being kinder to the zombie as they will not need to live a life of slavery and of having no mind.

Having access to weapons and ammunition is extremely important in a zombie attack. Those that are about to be attacked shouldn’t touch the zombie, for they will most likely become a zombie themselves. For this reason, it’s best to shoot the zombie. This is an effective way of killing them but avoid touching them at the same time.

Many people when they meet with one zombie or a group of zombies, find the nearest secure place to lock themselves in such as a house or garage. This is a big mistake as there really is no secure place when a zombie is trying to attack. If a zombie wants to attack, they will and there are no locks or walls that will stop them. However, zombies are very slow and awkward creatures and so, one can often escape a zombie simply by running away from it. Placing yourself in a situation where there is no escape such as a locked house, will only prolong the inevitable attack.

As a last resort, if you simply can find no other way to defend yourself against a zombie, try to act as one of them. Zombies will not attack their own kind and so, if they mistake you for a zombie, they will leave you alone and go elsewhere for their prey. To disguise yourself as a zombie, cover yourself with the scent of dead animals or humans, as there may be a few where you are if zombies are in the area. Also try to cover your skin and clothing with the blood from these animals. Adopt a slow and awkward walk and don’t speak, so you can further the disguise.
