there does not seem to be much info available on what a fan yin's effects generally are

if xin si is the fan yin of ding hai then this happened to me in 2001. that year i was accepted into a famous university and got top scores at school. so something positive happened on my fan yin.

i have heard that it means bad to good and good to bad? has anyone else heard this?

is gui si or xin si the fan yin to ding hai -or both?

Hi dd9,

Thanks for sharing. I agree that we can view Fan Yin as a transition from good to bad, or bad to good. Only had 3 of them so far. But whenever it happened to me, the year usually started out quite well. Then it is a little extreme when you just met a very good friend, however, she had to move away at the same year. Or it could be losing a distant family member, girlfriend/boyfriend. I guess it also signals a new beginning; their part in our life story is done.

You are right. In your case, the fan yin will be Gui Si. In addition, Xin Hai and Ji Hai are also fan yin to a Ding Hai daymaster.

I forgot that Hai only apply if you have Si in any of the four branches. As for Xin and Ji, when there exists Ding and Yi on the heavenly stems. So that gives Xin Hai and Ji Hai.  Sorry for the confusion. Basically, it is heaven and earth clash.

Hi dd9,

If we consider the energy map of 2 entirely conflicting pillar (HS + EB), then usually Fan Yin will be expected to be negative.  However, if Fan Yin occurs to a neutral pillar, I expect the impact to be less critical, probably causing discomfort at most.  If Fan Yin liberates the Useful God, it may instead throw up positive effect.
