During a casual chat with a Chinese Physician about health matters, she spoke about a TCM name for mumps for which I was not familiar.  Then she proceeded to describe about the localized cure for mumps and this rekindled my curiosity again.

I am not sure if this applies to Chinese in other parts of the world.  But among Singapore Chinese, a popular way to cure mumps is have a person with Chinese Zodiac Tiger write the Chinese word Tiger “虎”on the jawline of a person below the cheek.  The colloquial Chinese name of mumps is 猪头皮 literally translated as the Pig's forehead skin, apparently because the swell that mumps caused in a person make his face look bloated and round like a pig's face.  So the idea is to have a Tiger have the Pig as a meal and mumps will go away!

Incidentally, this also reminds me of Bazi cures prescribed by certain Fengshui practitioners.  For those who's Bazi is afflicted by the Chinese Zodiac Pig or whose luck is bad in the Year of Pig, these practitioners advice is for them to wear a pendant of a Tiger and the problems will be alleviated.  By coincidence, the Pig and Tiger are involved in a combination (六合), so this is the reasoning put forward by these practitioners as Bazi cure.

Effective or not?

HI flexon,

I find it hilarious too.  Even on the case of bazi practitioners asking people to wear tiger pendant.

Sin Min newspaper runs a series of articles on some of these so call grandmother's cure and verify with a TCM doctor.

Can't recally the article, but i think the ink that was used to write the Tiger character has to be from some herbs.  Maybe it is the herbs that is helps.  Maybe the doctor or master who invented this was just trying to be creative during treatment and somehow people mis-interpret ...

Tiger and Pig also has destruction 破 relationship ... so what's makes those people wearing the pendent so sure it is not inviting the negative effect ...  Grin

I'm quite doubtful on the ink, as myself personally have been asked by my parents to write the word onto ppl's cheek occasionally coz im the only tiger in our family and relative members. I was alwiz wondering what can a word 虎 help to cure it.
Possibly is like what flexon said, pyschological helps in the self healing process. Snake canot leh, later eat the pig d poison the owner how leh? hahaha  Tongue
