Bird as pet: let it free or not?

Some says that keeping bird in cage is not good.
Letting it free will not help the bird either as it wont be able to feed itself, says others.

My observation
Around my house, there are wild birds around.  Here we call them burung gereja (literally means church bird).  I used to feed them by throwing food on the yard.  Then I noticed that there are 2 birds that are different.  My friend said that they are "expensive" birds.  may be running away from left-open cage?  They are well and have friends (who am I to say this, he he he)

Conclusion
If a bird to be set free, it wont fly far.  Make sure there is a little nest for the bird to stay and provide the bird with some food every day.  It will stay alive and well.

A taboo to share with you here. My mother is a Chinese Hokkien (Fujian). She told me that the Fujian people has a verse "Breed dog will buy big house, breed bird will lost wealth". My mother told me this when she realised that her brother has bought a new house after breeding a dog for a few months. Whereas my mother was feeding the wild birds with the expired food and she has loss some wealth from her business recently - not a big amount.

   Hahaha..after i read your post i cant stop laughing...u know y your mom making lost in the business, coz se breed wild bird with the expire food.hahaha
